Botox Vs. Filler

What one is best for you and your needs?

First, it comes down to what kind of a look you’re hoping to achieve before we can figure out what option to go with.

So, let’s make this easy for you. The purpose of Botox is to paralyze the facial muscles while fillers are to fill in any volume loss. Botox is typically used to prevent muscles while filler helps to treat deep wrinkles or volume loss. With Botox, you typically need to wait 3 days to 14 to see results while filler appears almost immediately. With finishing results, you can expect Botox to last from 3-8 months while filler is much longer with a lasting result of up to two years.

Okay, so let’s dive in deeper – what exactly ARE Botox and Filler injections?

BOTOX

Botox®, or botulinum toxin type A (Botox Cosmetic), is a Health Canada approved protein that has been used safely in medical and cosmetic applications for over twenty years. When injected into select muscles of facial expression, it will cause temporary relaxation and improvement in the appearance of moderate-to-severe dynamic and static wrinkles and lines. The cosmetic results may vary but typically last from 3 to 8 months. The most common areas treated include:

  • Frown Lines or Glabella Wrinkles
  • Crows Feet or Laugh Lines
  • Forehead Wrinkles

Botox® treatment only takes approximately 10 minutes. The treatment does not require any anesthesia, is painless, and requires no recovery time. The maximal effect of treatment will be evident within 10 days. Botox® is also indicated for the treatment of excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis. Axillary hyperhidrosis may be improved for up to 12 months.

FILLERS

Fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural polysaccharide present in the human body that binds water and hydrates the skin and soft tissues. No allergy testing is required. These fillers may be injected into the skin or subcutaneously, resulting in greater fullness, volume correction, and improvement of facial wrinkles and folds. Restoring volume loss reduces the signs of aging and helps you look fresher and more youthful. Filler products feature different gel particle sizes that are utilized for different purposes – from eliminating tiny lines to enhancing facial contours. Dr. Elmaraghy performs all treatments and will choose the right product combination to create the look that you desire. Fillers are most commonly used to improve:

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette Lines and Corners of the Mouth
  • Frown Lines or Glabella wrinkles
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Lip Wrinkles

Fillers are also used to augment volume and enhance facial features:

  • Cheek and cheekbone augmentation
  • Tear trough or infraorbital hollow
  • Nose reshaping
  • Lip augmentation
  • Chin augmentation
  • Temple
  • Jawline or mandible augmentation
  • Earlobe
  • Hand

The treatment is performed with topical anesthetic, requires approximately 30 minutes, and is very safe. The results are immediate and typically last between 6 months to 2 years. Recovery time is generally minimal.
